Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography is an aquarium and research institution located in La Jolla, California. The facility is affiliated with the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego.
History
The aquarium was founded in 1903 by Frank Pickering and opened to the public in 1905. The facility originally consisted of 12 tanks containing marine life from local waters. In 1909, Pickering partnered with William A. Kenney to build a new, larger facility that could accommodate more tanks and exhibit space. The new facility, which cost $35,000 to build, opened to the public in 1910.
Today, Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography is one of the world’s leading research institutions. The facility houses more than 60 tanks containing over 3,000 specimens of marine life. The aquarium also has a library and museum on site.
