Cabrillo National Monument

The Cabrillo National Monument is a U.S. National Monument located in San Diego, California. The monument commemorates the landing of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo at San Diego Bay on September 28, 1542. This was the first time a European explorer had set foot on what is now the West Coast of the United States.

History

The monument was established in 1907 by President Theodore Roosevelt and is maintained by the National Park Service. The visitors center contains exhibits about Cabrillo’s voyage and the history of San Diego. There are also opportunities to go whale watching, tidepooling, and hiking.

Attractions

One of the main attractions at the Cabrillo National Monument is the Old Point Loma Lighthouse. The lighthouse was built in 1855 and was in operation until 1891. The lighthouse offers stunning views of San Diego Bay and the city skyline.
