Cabrillo National Monument

The Cabrillo National Monument is a U.S. National Monument located in San Diego, California. The monument commemorates the landing of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo at San Diego Bay on September 28, 1542. This was the first time a European explorer had set foot on what is now the West Coast of the United States.

The monument was established in 1907 by President Theodore Roosevelt and is maintained by the National Park Service. The visitors center contains exhibits about Cabrillo’s voyage and the history of San Diego. There are also opportunities to go whale watching, tidepooling, and hiking.

One of the main attractions at the Cabrillo National Monument is the Old Point Loma Lighthouse. The lighthouse was built in 1855 and was in operation until 1891. The lighthouse offers stunning views of San Diego Bay and the city skyline.

Another popular attraction is the monument’s tidepools. These pools are home to a variety of marine life including sea urchins, crabs, and starfish. Visitors can explore the tidepools during low tide and get a closeup look at the creatures that live there.

The Cabrillo National Monument also hosts a number of events throughout the year. One popular event is the “First Landing Celebration” which commemorates Cabrillo’s arrival in San Diego. The event includes a reenactment of the landing, as well as music and dancing.

Other events include a Junior Ranger Day Camp, an Earth Day Celebration, and a Halloween Hike.
